Meet the IELTS 9.0 Scorers of Bangladesh

For most IELTS candidates, crossing the Band 7 threshold feels like a monumental battle, and scoring an 8.0 is often viewed as the absolute ceiling.

Occasionally, word spreads of someone achieving an 8.5, and test-takers shake their heads in disbelief, wishing they possessed that kind of luck. And then, some shatter the scale entirely, securing a flawless 9.0 out of 9.0. It is easy to wonder if individuals with this kind of score are even real.

Well, they are!

From regional towns like Sylhet and Jessore to the bustling streets of Dhaka, a rare bunch of Bangladeshi test-takers has achieved absolute perfection. They are individuals who refused to be intimidated by the test format.

This article is the story of who they are and exactly how they did it.

MD Atiful Islam Chowdhury - Band 9.0

MD Atiful Islam Chowdhury is an IELTS Band 9.0 scorer from Sylhet, Bangladesh, with a Bachelor's degree in Education. He stands out as the first person in this region to score a Band 9.0 in IELTS.

He explained on his social media platforms that he scored a 7.0 around a decade ago and began working as a part-time private tutor for IELTS, O-level, and A-level. Driven by a personal challenge to reach absolute mastery in English pedagogy, he later retook the exam to secure a flawless 9.0 out of 9.0, subsequently posting his actual Test Report Form on his personal social media accounts.

This milestone led him to establish HOUSE OF WORD, a British Council, IDP, and ETS-accredited institute, and afterwards, he co-founded Mock Test For IELTS.

"The necessary resources are all out there, but staring at them won't help you. Pick just one Cambridge practice book, do one section, and ruthlessly analyse your mistakes. To get your desired score, you don't need more practice; you simply need to stop repeating the same errors, and that requires actual personalised feedback," he explains.

He advises IELTS test-takers to emphasise rational thinking over memorising rare vocabulary. He also tells them to first understand the official speaking and writing band descriptors, as well as to make a habit of casual reading for fun.

Qazi Mustabeen Noor - Band 9.0

Qazi Mustabeen Noor is a Band 9.0 scorer from Bangladesh who completed her BA in English at North South University and her PhD from Queen’s University, Canada.

She knew that general fluency would not automatically guarantee an overall Band 9.0 on the Academic module. She treated the exam as a strict assessment of functional metrics rather than a simple evaluation of everyday language skills.

In a 2019 interview with Prothom Alo, she shared some tips for aspiring candidates.

She advises practising past paper questions from the Cambridge series books and watching speaking mock exams on YouTube. She asks students to train their ears to different accents by regularly watching English TV series on Netflix.

"When you practice at home, don’t shy away from online resources that can help you to improve your speaking, listening, reading and writing," she says.

Kazi Muhammad Shafi Iqbal - Band 9.0

Kazi Muhammad Shafi Iqbal is an exceptional three-time Band 9.0 scorer from Bangladesh. He was part of the 18th BCS (Police) cohort and joined the Bangladesh Police in 1999, building a distinguished law enforcement career across units including the DMP, KMP, CID, PBI, and the Police Staff College Bangladesh.

He is also an alumnus of the IBA department at the University of Dhaka, where he obtained his MBA. Furthermore, he leveraged his flawless command of the language as an expert English trainer to become the Head of IELTS at TESOL Bangladesh.

Tanuva Hossain - Band 9.0

Tanuva Hossain is a CELTA-certified ESL teacher with 10+ years of experience. She channelled her deep pedagogical background directly into her own IELTS exam, securing a Band 9.0.

She emphasises that reading and listening are receptive skills that directly build the productive skills of writing and speaking. If candidates want to write better, they must read everything from the news, short stories, novels, to sample essays. If they want to speak better, they must listen to English constantly through music, TED Talks, movies, or series.

Raisa Shamma - Band 9.0

Raisa Shamma approached the IELTS as a strict time-management challenge. Relying on highly targeted preparation, she achieved a Band 9.0 in October 2022, as she described during a video interview.

Her journey was defined by utilising full mock tests from the official website of the British Council and a long video from E2 IELTS to identify and eliminate errors before test day. She stresses the importance of building a genuine daily reading habit and practising under realistic conditions to lock down high scores efficiently, without unnecessarily prolonging the preparation timeline.

Azmain Mujtabir - Band 9.0

Our next 9-scorer is Azmain Mujtabir, a 19-year-old Bangladeshi-Malaysian student from Jessore.

Azmain not only secured a Band 9.0 in the IELTS but also achieved a perfect 1600/1600 on the SAT, alongside 100% marks in his A-Level Physics, Chemistry, Math, and Further Math exams at Cempaka International School in Kuala Lumpur.

Aspiring to study at top-tier universities like Harvard, Oxford, Cambridge, or Columbia, his ultimate goal is to become an Aerospace Engineer.

Jawad Rahman Jim - Band 9.0

Jawad Rahman Jim is a student in the Department of Law at the University of Dhaka. He is also recognised as an online educator and English instructor for academic admission programs on platforms like YouTube and Facebook.

Although his accolade started spreading through Facebook in mid-2026, he took the IELTS test in 2021, where he secured a Band 9.0.

He currently serves as a lead educator at Educatum School, where his specialised SSC and HSC preparation courses continue to draw thousands of students across mainstream digital platforms.

Faatiha Aayat - Band 8.5

Faatiha Aayat is a globally recognised Bangladeshi-American author, climate activist, and dynamic public speaker. While she did not achieve a perfect overall 9.0, she secured an 8.5 band score with a flawless 9.0 in the Speaking module in August 2024.

To our knowledge, she is the only person of Bangladeshi descent known to have scored a Band 8.5 at the age of 13.

Driven by her high-impact public engagements as a global ambassador at a remarkably young age, her journey is a powerful testament to how authentic communication and clear confidence shape both standardised test scores and real-world influence.
