How to Run a Mock Speaking Test
Interlocutor & Candidate: Practice with a partner where one acts as the IELTS Examiner and the other as the Candidate. If practicing alone, record your voice.
Select a Cue Card: Choose a random cue card from the list below.
The 1-Minute Prep:
Start a timer for 1 minute.
Use this time to write down brief keywords (not full sentences) on a notepad. Focus on answering all bullet points.
The 2-Minute Talk:
Set a timer for 2 minutes.
Speak continuously. Do not stop until the examiner stops you or you hit the 2-minute mark. Aim for at least 1.5 minutes.
Part 3 Follow-up: Have your partner ask 3–4 follow-up abstract questions on the same theme, or ask yourself questions that look at the broader, societal perspective of the cue card theme.
Grade yourself or have your practice partner grade you from Band 1.0 to 9.0 across these four official categories:
Fluency and Coherence (FC):
Do you speak smoothly with minimal hesitation, self-correction, or repetition?
Do you use logical cohesive devices and discourse markers (e.g., On the other hand, consequently, moving on to...)?
Lexical Resource (LR):
Do you use a wide vocabulary naturally and accurately?
Do you employ idiomatic expressions, collocations, and precise synonyms?
Grammatical Range and Accuracy (GRA):
Do you use a mix of simple, compound, and complex sentence structures?
Is your grammar mostly error-free, particularly tenses (past, present, perfect)?
Pronunciation (PR):
Can you be understood effortlessly?
Do you use natural intonation, word stress, and clear sound production?
